Several weeks ago, I enjoyed an afternoon with our founder, Bill Pulte. Beyond the opportunity to sit with an industry icon and learn from almost 70 years of accumulated industry wisdom, he is still just one of the coolest people you will ever meet.

It was clear from the outset that Bill still has tremendous passion for this business and cares deeply about the company he created and the people who work here.

For those of you who know Bill, it won’t surprise you that our conversation skipped from subject to subject all afternoon. One area where he did linger, however, was on product design.

Throughout his career, Bill was forever tinkering with product as he worked to design homes that met buyer needs. Our 12 step new product design process is well beyond tinkering, but the objective is the same…design homes that meet needs and match how people live.

As you can see from the picture, Bill hasn’t changed very much. He still wears his favorite Technicolor sweater and still has a sweet tooth as he thoroughly enjoyed an ice cream sundae for dessert.

I wish I had jotted down all the Bill-isms I heard as we talked, but it would have distracted me from seeing the obvious key to his success…love what you do and be passionate about pursuing it.
